Heirloom Freesias, Fragrant, Multiply by Bulb Division and Seed

by | Mar 12, 2012 | Other Bulbs for Warm Climates | 0 comments

Heirloom freesias are beautiful, fragrant, and multiply quickly from both seed and bulbs. They bloom reliably each year and often return when the rains begin, even after being left in pots. Their hardiness and strong fragrance make them a delightful addition to any garden.

The double yellow freesias, pictured above, are widely available and known for their large, fragrant blossoms. These freesias bring vibrant color to the garden and fill the air with their sweet scent. In addition to the yellow ones, I planted both single and double white freesias, though they are not visible in the current pictures. However, past years have seen beautiful displays of single pink and red freesias in my garden.

A close-up of the single red freesias reveals their bright, eye-catching color. Their vivid red flowers stand out, adding a pop of bold color to the garden. If these freesias were staked, they would grow taller, as their heavy blooms tend to cause the stems to bend. The staking would allow the flowers to stand upright, showing their full potential.

Freesias, especially heirloom varieties, are easy to grow and maintain. They thrive in both garden beds and pots, making them versatile for any space. Their ability to naturalize and multiply quickly ensures that your garden will continue to grow more beautiful each year. With regular care, including staking when necessary, they will bloom for weeks, providing long-lasting color and fragrance.

Whether you’re planting freesias for the first time or adding them to an existing garden, they are an excellent choice for brightening up your space. Their strong scent, vibrant colors, and low maintenance requirements make them a favorite for gardeners who appreciate both beauty and ease. Plant some this season and enjoy their stunning display year after year.
