Tuberous Gloriosa Rothschildiana – Perennial Vine

by | Feb 10, 2012 | Other Bulbs for Warm Climates | 0 comments

Gloriosa Rothschildiana Superba, a beautiful perennial vine from Africa, is easy to grow and will multiply quickly. The striking crimson red flowers with a yellow base and slight yellow edges make it an eye-catching climber. It grows 5-6 feet tall and produces many lily-like flowers over an extended period.

This perennial vine is perfect for potting and is a long-lasting cut flower. If the vines are left uncut, the tubers will double, and the plant will thrive in most areas. Gloriosa lilies do well in full sun and need good drainage. Water the plant well during its growing season and provide a sturdy structure for it to climb, such as walls, fences, or trellises.

Gloriosa Rothschildiana - Perennial Vine

Planting Gloriosa Rothschildiana lilies is straightforward. Lay the long tubers flat and cover them with soil. They do best when planted about 6 inches apart and 3-4 inches deep in well-draining soil. After planting, water the tubers thoroughly to help them settle. When growth begins in the spring, feed the plant with a liquid fertilizer once a week. This will encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

As the season progresses, switch to a half-strength fertilizer every two weeks to keep the plants blooming throughout the summer. With proper care, these stunning flowers may even continue blooming into early autumn.

Gloriosa Rothschildiana lilies are not only easy to grow but also rewarding for gardeners. Their vibrant flowers make a stunning addition to any garden or potted display. Whether used as a climbing vine or cut for floral arrangements, Gloriosa Rothschildiana Superba will provide beauty and color throughout the growing season. It’s a low-maintenance plant that adds a touch of tropical elegance to any space.
